Archimedes is more than a philosopher or Merlin’s owl - it’s also the name of a healthcare company in San Francisco. And Archimedes Inc. needed to do some big data crunching, so for that, it turned to Univa (News - Alert). With help from Univa, Archimedes can now predict the flow of disease through a person’s body, determining how it can affect a population and helping to prevent it from spreading.
Thanks to Univa, Archimedes used idle hardware to run Hadoop software. Because it could use its existing hardware, there was no need to invest in any additional clusters, saving money and making the most out of its existing investments.
What Univa does is harness several computers to act as a single unit, compiling, analyzing and crunching lots of data into a meaningful form. With the Univa Grid Engine and Hadoop (the open-source big data solution), Archimedes created the Aggregator, a new software that makes correlations between events in real-time to provide data that could save lives to researchers and health care practitioners at the fastest speeds yet.
Thanks to the Univa Grid Engine, Archimedes managed to save up to 50 percent of its capital expenditure, while removing any need to invest in a separate cluster for Hadoop. It now optimizes its existing servers and computers, but the system is easily scalable at no additional cost.
“Archimedes is showing the medical world how to use big data to solve real medical problems, both at an individual and national level by comparing a person’s electronic health record with various risk factors,” said Gary Tyreman (News - Alert), CEO of Univa, in a statement. “Univa Grid Engine is enabling organizations to unleash the power of Hadoop framework without the heavy costs associated with buying a new cluster to cater to its needs.”
Archimedes was wise to turn to Univa. It’s now making the most out of its existing systems, saving money and creating software that can help save lives. Both efficiency and cost savings are always a plus, and Univa has provided those in great quantity. The Hadoop application and Aggregator software are working better than ever, thanks to Univa.
